SHORT WALKS

Molly's Cottage is ideal for short exploratory walks round the village or further afield

Perhaps start with a stroll up to the church then home across the fields. If you don't dally you'll be back by the time the supper's cooked.

Oak, ash and field maple behind the cottage

Sydling St Nicholas village green

Then again a walk beside the stream to the village green and back along the high street. Passing The Greyhound, our village pub, the ale may slow you down but then you could always stop and have a meal!

A stroll past the sawmill, the path follows the bank of the stream and home along the drovers path. You just may be rewarded with the glimpse of a kingfisher or a white egret and you'll almost certainly meet our resident geese.

LONGER WALKS

Just a glimpse

The adventurous may take the cross country way to Cerne Abbas where there are several good pubs serving tasty food and even more tasty real ales. It's a three mile hike and you'll climb 200 feet or more for stunning views before dropping down into the Cerne Valley. The beer's nearly as good as Sydling's own but your thirst will be keener!

Try the circular route into the downland to the west of the village, about a mile or so. It's called 'Breakheart Hill' but that may refer to the loss of a lover to a one time village lad rather than the steepness of the hill.

It's not that bad!

Bushes Bottom is for the romantics. A lost farm settlement away in the hills. Reached only on foot it's a classic case of the travelling being just as good as the arrival. It's a five mile round trip but you'll meet some of our Roe deer for sure (14 is the best count so far) and the buzzards rear their chicks in the taller trees on the way.
